The Hidden Washing Machine Problems
Many home appliances can deliver benefits and ease daily chores. The washing machine has made it possible to clean linens in the comfort of our own homes and avoid lugging baskets of clothes to the laundry mat. It also is a cost savings alternative to sending clothes out to be laundered. However, with these benefits comes complications when washing machine problems arise.
Washing machines break. Once this happens you can either attempt to repair it yourself or hire a professional to do the job. Taking on the task of repairing the appliance can cause much frustration if not familiar with the process. Hiring the job out can result in a large, unexpected bill.
Not all stains can be removed by washing machines. Laundering services and dry cleaners are professionals that have been trained on how to remove stains and how to care for specific types of fabric.
Supermarket shelves are flooded with washing machine products. Detergents with stain fighters, color protectors, gentle soaps, bleach and fabric softeners are just a few of the products offered. Without much information we often chose the inappropriate soap for the type of cleaning desired. Clothes can fade, get bleach spots or unravel if the soap is not gentle enough.
Not all clothes can be washed at home. Some need to be dry cleaned, so the purchase of a washer does not always ensure the expense will be eliminated.
Prior to putting the clothes in the washer, they need to be separated by color to ensure that the dyes do not run. One red sock can can turn a load of whites pink. A black shirt can become brown if washed with a load of bleached whites. The process of separating the clothes can not only be a time consuming task, but has the opportunity to be costly if one article of clothing gets tossed and washed with the wrong group of colors.
Washing machines can cause the energy bill to increase. Heating the water for hot or warm settings is most of the energy use. In some cases it can increase the energy bill by over $200 per year, however the cost does depend on the type and model of the washer, the capacity and the temperature.
If clothes are left in the washer they can become moldy and mildewy. It is important to commit to being home once the clothes are done drying so they can be transferred to be dried. If left in the washer and mold does develop, the clothes will have to be washed again. In extreme cases they can be ruined.
Although doing laundry at home is more cost effective than sending clothes out to a laundry service, it is much more time consuming. Clothes need to be separated, washed, dried, folded, ironed if necessary and finally put away. If laundering clothes for a family of four, it can be an all day commitment.
Washing machine problems can happen more frequently if proper upkeep is not maintained. Detergent and hard water can build up which will result in the clothes not getting as clean as they should. A moldy smell can develop if all the does not water get drained appropriately. If cool water is used continually, bacteria can also build up that hot water usually eliminates.
